Disney’s top priority for 2019 is launching a streaming service. It will be cheaper than Netflix and possibly named “Disney Play.”

Big media companies are alarmed by Netflix and other tech companies quick rise in the entertainment industry and want to build their own platforms. The result, for customers, will be companies pulling their content from Netflix and building their own services.

That’s just what Disney plans to do. Here’s Cynthia Littleton, writing for Variety:

Disney is counting on the exclusivity factor of selected Marvel, “Star Wars,” Pixar and Disney-branded properties to drive interest in the service. Iger has acknowledged that the Disney Play price tag will be less than Netflix’s $8-$14 monthly fee — a reflection of the lighter content load.

Whatever the price point, one thing is clear: the days of Netflix having everything you want to watch are coming to an end. Cord cutters will have to decide what it is they want to watch, and if they have kids who love Disney, this service will not exactly feel optional.

But who knows? Maybe eventually someone will offer deals that give access to a bunch of different streaming services for one price, and we’ll all end up paying for cable-style bundles just like before. There is nothing new under the sun.
