First things first: you need a good photo. If the photo is already on your iOS device, then you’re all set. If not, you’ll want to save an appropriate picture to your iOS device or take a new one. For profile picture purposes, you want a clean and clear shot of your face, a relatively neutral background, and something that will look good cropped into a circle.

Photo in hand, you can change your profile photo from your iOS device by simply opening up the Settings app. At the top of the Settings menu, tap on your name, as seen below:

Within the Apple ID menu, tap on your profile picture (or lack thereof) to change it.

Regardless of which option you choose, you’ll be presented with a simple editor that allows you to move and scale the photo. As much as I like this photo of Cricket and me, it makes for a poor profile picture as is because so little of the photo is my face.

Pinch and zoom to enlarge your face in the circle, if necessary, and then scoot the photo around to center your face like so. When you have it where you like it, tap “Choose”.

Exit out of the Apple ID menu and you’ll see your new profile picture in the main Settings menu.

Now, whenever you send your contact information to someone, chat with them on iMessage, or use other Apple services, they’ll see your shining face instead of your initials.
